You really don't need to be a geek to secure your PC. Its easy once you learn how to do it effectively. For starters you will need a firewall, an antivirus and some type of antispyware program. There are thousands of them out there and they all have their strengths as well as their weaknesses.
I am going to start out with the free stuff cause if you are like me you really don't want to spend a fortune on PC Security. The truth is that you really don't have to. If you get the right tools then it can actually be better then the paid stuff. Sounds hard to believe but its true.
In most of those paid security programs out there they have what is called a security suite. It comes bundled with everything you need. Most of them cost more then what they are really worth. Norton and McAfee are over bloated and still manage to let malware through. A security suite normally comes with a firewall, an antivirus, an antispyware and some of the better ones have other programs like Dns protection. While we are still in the subject of security suites there is one out there that is totally free. This is not a trial its actually free.

If you are wondering what is malware its just an easy way to say malice software. Which refers to all viruses, spywares, trojans, worms and anything else that causes harm to your computer or internet experience. Every malware program is nothing more then a group of computer programs that were designed to cause harm to your PC. Some malware is even designed to cause problems to the internet itself ( Worms ). Malware is changing every day so that is why it is very important to update all of your programs as well as your security suite. This is especially true when it comes to your operating system. So make sure you have automatic updates turned on.
Here is something that will help you make sure that all of your programs are up to date and secure.

The problem with security suites is that they may not offer you the best and easiest protection out there. Yes this includes the ones you gotta pay for. You really cannot trust those reviews you see online and on commercials because they are just that commercial vendors trying to sell their products. I saw a review where internet explorer was the most secure browser on the internet. I must have laughed for hours but anyway lets get back to securing your PC.
You can put together your very own security suite based on free software. It will even be better then most if not all of those paid for security suites. There really is no need to cough up a lot of money to keep your computer safe online. Ask anyone in a reputable forum just how many people who own those expensive security suites got their computers infected. This actually happens daily.
Lets start with a firewall. The best free firewall out there is Comodo Firewall. Its got a few false positives which can be rather annoying so if you have a router and/or modem that comes with a firewall then make sure to set up your routers firewall. Then use the windows firewall for extra protection. Windows firewall will not protect you from outbound traffic like trojans and spyware but its a hell of a lot less annoying then most of those other firewalls out there.
This is a work in progress so there will be a lot more to come along. I will do my best to keep updating it.
